What is diastasis and how is it treated?

Diastasis (diastasis of the abdomen, diastasis of the abdomen, diastasis of the rectus) is the separation of the left and right sides of the rectus abdominis muscle, with a simultaneous weakening of the connective tissue – linea alba.
It most often occurs after pregnancy, but also in men with weaker core muscle activation, in obese people, due to improper exercise and after abdominal surgery.

Causes and risk factors

The most common causes of diastasis include:
– increased pressure on the abdominal wall during pregnancy or after a cesarean section,

– hormonal changes that affect the elasticity of connective tissue,

– improper exercise technique and excessive strain on the abdominal muscles,

– obesity and weak core muscles,

– lifting heavy loads without engaging the core,

– genetics and age.

Symptoms and how to recognize diastasis recti

The most common symptoms are:

– a bulge (“doming”) in the midline of the abdomen during physical exertion,

– a feeling of a gap or hollow space under the fingers above or below the navel,

– core weakness and instability,

– lower back pain,

– poor posture and reduced movement control,

– difficulty performing exercises or breathing properly.

At-home test: Lie on your back, place your fingers just above your navel, and slightly lift your head. If you feel a gap between the two abdominal muscles, you may have diastasis recti. However, an official diagnosis should be made by a specialist.

Diagnosis and why diastasis recti should be treated

The diagnosis is made by a physiatrist or physiotherapist through a clinical examination, and if necessary, ultrasound imaging. Improperly treated or untreated diastasis recti can lead to: chronic back pain, hernias, pelvic floor weakness, digestive system problems, poor posture, and loss of core functionality. Timely treatment prevents long-term consequences.
